Obituary of Margaret Elizabeth Coakley

Please share a memory of Margaret to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

COAKLEY, Margaret Elizabeth, wife of the late William Samuel Coakley, Jr., died at the Harrodsburg Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, on Saturday, August 26, 2017.  She was born in Danville, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Evon Clarence Rogers and the late Lillian Sue DeJarnette Rogers.  She was the beloved mother of Carl William Coakley of Frankfort, Marian Coakley Cloys (Mark) of Philadelphia, Mississippi, and Brenda Gayle Coakley Rogers of Frankfort. Other survivors include five grandchildren, Devin William Hisel (Nelda) of Nicholasville, Chad Layne Hisel (Rachel) of Stamping Ground, Patrick Wayne Hisel (Holly) of Newburgh, Indiana, Brian Andrew Cloys and Emily Rose Cloys, both of Philadelphia, Mississippi. She is survived by eight great-grandchildren, William Clay Hisel and Summer Maya Nichole Hisel, both of Nicholasville, Lillian Layne Hisel, Charles Eugene Hisel, Eleanor Rose Hisel, Henry Lee Hisel, and Boone Waller Hisel, all of Stamping Ground, and Josie Grace Hisel of Newburgh, Indiana.  She is also survived by five nephews and one niece.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Woodson Rogers.

Margaret was a graduate of Danville High School, Danville, Kentucky, and subsequently graduated from the University of Kentucky in Lexington with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Library Science.  She worked at the University of Kentucky Library during her years at U. of K. She enjoyed writing, and skillfully depicted the heart, soul, ingenuity, and will to survive of the 1920’s and 1930’s in the articles that she submitted, some published, to the Frankfort State Journal in the entertaining column of “I Remember When”. However, her greatest devotion was to her husband and children as a homemaker.  Margaret was a dedicated Christian and church member wherever they lived, from Ohio to Missouri, to New Jersey, and back to Kentucky.  She taught Sunday School classes for 35 years as she served the Lord, and involved herself in church mission projects.  She was quite the competitor in family picnic sports, but was just as avid about English grammar and reading a good book, or discussing biblical events as she prepared to teach each Sunday.  If there is one quality that could summarize who she was, it would be self-sacrificing as she supported her husband’s many accomplishments and devoted herself totally to her family.
