Obituary of Anna Sue Thomson

Please share a memory of Anna to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Anna Sue Thomson, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, has crossed over the waters and laid down to rest on Sunday evening, January 5, 2025 in Columbia, South Carolina. She received the Lord’s blessing in her home and was surrounded by her children. Having been gifted 97 years of life on earth by our Lord, Anna Sue was born Easter morning on April 17, 1927 in Louisa, Kentucky to the late Reynolds Ferguson and Ruby Webb. Her husband was the late Lt. Col. George B Thomson, former KY VFW Post Commander, 4075, VFW State Commander, and name sake for the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore, Ky. Anna Sue’s early years were spent in Louisa, Kentucky and Ft. Gay, West Virginia. Mother had wonderful stories to tell of a one room school house, churning butter, wheelbarrow rides in the fields, and paying about 3 cents to walk across the toll bridge. By the age of 11 she moved to Frankfort which thereafter she called home. Her commitment to Christ came during this time with baptism at The First Christian Church. Her teen years were spent swimming in the Forks of Elkhorn Creek, and dancing up a storm to the jitterbug beat with her lifelong best friend, the late Emma Smith Davis Jordan. She recalled rationing, the scarcity of everything, and soldier friends departing the train station during World War II. Little did she know that a few years later she would marry her own career soldier. Anna Sue married the late George Beatty Thomson on Dec 7, 1946 in Frankfort, Ky. Thereafter, she became a “Career Army Wife” packing up, moving out, and keeping the “home fort” going smoothy for 20 years in across an astonishing 16 houses. So many times were made special by mother from a dinner on the table every night to wonderful holiday celebrations. Her Sunday morning hamburger gravy and biscuits were a sought-after treat. She also served as room mother, cub scout leader, and jack of all trades. Military assignments took Anna Sue and children to Ft. Bliss, Texas, Japan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky (George B was remote in Greenland), Ft. Benning, Georgia, France, New York, Illinois - and finally home to Frankfort in 1967. At home in Frankfort, her roots were never far from her cherished beginnings, dutifully paying taxes on the Ferguson homestead for years, and with pride helping with the summer mowing of the Robertson – Ferguson hillside cemetery in Ft. Gay, West Virginia. Mother visited this hillside as often as she could, enjoyed picnic lunches just outside the Ferguson farmhouse, and of course, hunted for “a special rock from the creek bed”. This was always a special time when she would most often speak with loving memories of her grandparents: Samuel Monroe Ferguson and Eliza Robertson, and then the funny stories of Carl Webb and Norma Watts. Anna Sue was proud of her Scottish heritage and family lineage which included 3 direct line Revolutionary War soldiers: Samuel Ferguson, Macajah Frasher, and Bennett Wellman. She became a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, Susannah Hart Shelby Chapter, Frankfort. Anna Sue will be forever lovingly remembered by her 3 children: Linda Beatty (Bob) Sexton of Lexington, SC, Angela Gayle (Michael) Hogan of Canton, GA, and Robert Alexander Thomson of Columbia, SC; her treasured grandchildren: Angela Michelle Hogan (Brandon) Wright, Jared Michael (Amanda) Hogan, Anna Kristen Sexton (Kevin) Godsea, and Galen Thomas Sexton; her cherished great-grandchildren: Abigail Hogan, Archer Wright, Laura Ann and William Godsea, and Jennings Sexton; step-dDaughter, Shannon Louise DeVore and deceased step-son, George Anthony Thomson. Her legacy is one of unyielding warmth, love, and honesty. She leaves with us remarkable stories reaching back to the 1860’s, including a rich family history that will be cherished and carried forward. Her memory will live on inspiring strength, resilience and generosity. In remembrance of Anna Sue Thomson, please join us in honoring and celebrating the Lord’s gift to us of her 97 years on this earth. There will be a visitation at 10:00 am on Friday, January 24, 2025, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am at Rogers Funeral Home, 502 West 2nd St, Frankfort, Ky. Burial to follow in the Frankfort Cemetery. The Buck Run Baptist Church, Pastor Ben Pinkston, will serve as religious celebrant. In lieu of flowers, as you wish, donations may be made to the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center, 100 Veterans Drive, Wilmore, Ky 40390. Mother, we love you. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
