George James Abbott-Maze departed this life on March 8, 2025, at Bluegrass Hospice at University of Kentucky Healthcare. He struggled with a number of difficult health issues over the past several years, but lived as fully as possible until his final trip to the hospital. He was born to Stuart and Florence (Mills) Abbott in Paterson, New Jersey in 1943. His parents predeceased him as well as did his sister, Barbara, and brothers Alan and Donald. His beloved older brother Douglas (Kathi) resides in Foley, Al. George was a graduate of Monmouth University in West Long Branch, NJ. He lived and worked in New Jersey, New York, California, Washington state and Mississippi, often as a comptroller in large hotel chains and in the catering business. He spent two years in Seoul, Korea working at a civilian hotel on a US military base. Later he met and married Larry E. Maze and they retired in Kentucky, first in Frankfort and most recently in Lexington. George had the eye of an artist and created many needlepoint tapestries and pictures and gifted them far and wide. His most recent project was to needlepoint large tapestries of all fourteen Stations of the Cross for St. John’s Episcopal Church in Versailles, Kentucky. Afterwards, for many reasons, he stopped needlepoint work. George’s family includes his daughter, Leigh Ann Leaman (Eric) of Virginia, son Bradford DeMarco (Donna) of New Jersey, step-son Darren Maze of Mississippi, and step-daughters Danielle Maze of Colorado, Elizabeth Sniegocki (Ryan) of Arkansas and Kate Tafs (Frank) of Minnesota. His grandchildren and step-grandchildren include William Leaman, Nicholas DeMarco, Julian Leaman, Hannah Maze, Ethan Maze, Avery Turner, Landon Tafs, and Paige Tafs. There will be a service at Ascension Episcopal Church, Frankfort KY on Saturday, March 29th at 11:00 am, the Rev. Peter Doddema presiding. Memorial contributions are suggested to Bluegrass Care Navigators (Hospice).
