Obituary of E. Bruce Dungan

E. Bruce Dungan, 96, of Frankfort, Kentucky, died Saturday, April 19, 2025, surrounded by family, at Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital in Louisville after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife Peggy Dawson Dungan; sons Bruce G. Dungan (Karen), Stephen A. Dungan (Pamela), and Patrick M. Dungan (Jennifer); grandchildren Amanda D. Atkins, Nicholas G. Dungan (Sherry), Meredith D. Shouse (Nathaniel), John W. Welch (Rachel), S. Ashley Welch, Zachary J. Dungan (Molly), Dawson M. Dungan, and Daniel P. Dungan; and great-grandchildren Hannah Smith, Macy Dungan, Beth Smith, JD Smith, Sadie Dungan, Griffith Atkins, Collin Dungan, Nicholas Shouse, Kylie Welch, and Wesley Welch. He was predeceased by his parents Ellwood Griffith Dungan and Edith Mennig Dungan, as well as his sister Carol Dungan McAllister and and brother-in-law William A. McAllister.
Born in Philadelphia, PA on May 25, 1928, Bruce graduated from Brown Prep and then came to Danville, KY to attend Centre College, where he met his future wife Peggy Dawson and graduated in 1949. Bruce began his career at Farmers Bank & Capital Trust Co. as a teller, and in 1952 began a two-year stint in the US Army, serving in the Panama Canal Zone during the Korean War. He returned to the bank after his Army service and eventually rose to the position of Executive Vice President. Bruce became President of Farmers Capital Bank Corp, the holding company that owned Farmers Bank, and continued to serve as the Executive VP of the bank. During his career with the bank, he was instrumental in starting an economic development program utilizing the talents of Jack Hoover and Bruce Kennedy. Bruce also participated in fundraising programs for the Frankfort YMCA, Franklin County United Way and the Kentucky History Museum.
Bruce was involved in numerous civic organizations, including the Franklin County United Way, Frankfort YMCA receiving the Order of the Red Triangle, Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities, Sons of the American Revolution, The American Orchid Society, and Lions Club, and was a 50 year member of the American Legion. He was a lifelong supporter of Centre College both financially and in encouraging young people to attend Centre, convincing two of his great-granddaughters to attend.
Bruce loved life well, gathering with friends often for cookouts, picnics, fishing trips, and many bridge games. Bruce and Peggy traveled the world, visiting Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Switzerland, Italy, the British Isles, and many others. Many times, they traveled with Farmers Bank’s Capital First Travelers group.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 24th from 4:00 to 7:00pm at Rogers Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 25th at First Presbyterian Church, 416 West Main Street, Frankfort, KY. Interment will follow in the Frankfort Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren Amanda D. Atkins, Nicholas G. Dungan, Meredith D. Shouse, Zachary J. Dungan, Dawson M. Dungan, and Daniel P. Dungan. Honorary bearers will be S. Ashley Welch, John W. Welch, Warner Caines, Layne Wilkerson, Harry K. Rogers, Don Hines, Charlie Jones, Don Yancey, Bill Bowker, Curtis Milton, Eddie Roberts, Jimmy Rogers, Brenda Rogers, and Gary Arnold.
