David Hartley posted a condolence

When Roger, Margaret and Shawn lived in Louisville, he became part of our staff here at Ratterman and Sons Funeral Home on Bardstown Road. Roger was a greeter during visitations and helped out in the office. Everybody loved him here at the funeral home. He kept all of us in stitches most of the time. I was amazed by his knowledge of researching family histories, and he even helped with mine. As time went on, we both discovered he had worked at one time with my late mother in State Government. Such a small world!! His and Margaret's love of antiques, especially Kentucky antiques, was unsurpassed. After they moved back to Frankfort, we kept in touch, often times meeting somewhere there for lunch. He nicknamed me "Rev. Mr. Hartley" and addressed me with that greeting either in person, an email or note. I wish I could have been with you Margaret and Shawn today, but you will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers for many days to come. A dear friend has gone, and may your memory continue to be a blessing to us all!

I was very sad to hear of Roger's passing. We were cousins and fellow family researchers but more importantly were good friends. We had exchanged emails once or twice a week for the last ten years. I will miss him very much as will the family and his many friends will, I am sure.”

Roger was a very dear friend of ours for nearly fifty years. There was nothing he would not do for us, and one of the most generous people you would ever want to meet. We loved to listen to him recount history and speak of the colorful characters that made our heritage so rich. His eye for precious antiques was unparalleled. Roger could spot a sugar chest on the porch of a dilapidated house while he was headed full speed to the grocery store. Roger appreciated fine craftsmanship. His attention to detail was very keen to say the least. He loved the diversity of people, enjoying their slant on everything from politics to cats and dogs. He loved to laugh. Our lives were changed and made very rich by our good friend Roger Futrell. Rest in peace, brother. You will be greatly missed.
