I am saddened to hear of Mr. Medlar’s passing. I’ll never forget the day that I tested well enough to be a part of his class. I envied classmates and cousins who “made the cut” before me, and was forever changed the day he came in to my life.
Mr. Medlar taught me to play chess, reason, learn enthusiastically and to always think deeper and outside of boxes. Who can ever forget a maiden journey to animate an airplane or play endless rounds of Jeopardy on a Commodore 64? He coached me in “Math Counts” competitions and helped me to compete in, I think it was called the “Math Bowl.” He drove me to state Math Counts competition in Louisville while quizzing me on updated arrival times with the ever-changing variables of speed, miles left and needed stops along the way. He opened my eyes to the wonders of traveling beyond the borders of our town. My family dynamic would not allow trips to Frankfort, Louisville, Washington, D.C. or any of the other wonderful adventures that his leadership afforded. So, it could be said that Mr. Medlar greatly helped to shape me in to the man I ultimately would become. I am a pastor to a church that values real family and accepts those who are simply seeking community. I am a husband to a wife who actually digs the qualities and quirks that Mr. Medlar helped to cultivate. I am a father to children who think with no boxes. I am a man hoping to leave a legacy, that in his own way, Paul Medlar helped to shape. He was a teacher, mentor, hero and friend to many. I am honored to have been counted among those he impacted so deeply. Best teacher ever is too modest for him. He was simply more.

Bob and I are saddened to hear of Paul's passing...we taught together at Green Hills when it was a new school...had much fun together lesson planning and creating activities for our classes. "Battleship" or "Monopoly" were favorite past times for us. Paul lived next door to Linda Harmon and me over Brock's Store in Bledsoe...we ate our dinners together almost every evening. He loved to fix us his grandmother's recipe for pancakes. He truly loved teaching and brought a higher level of learning experiences to his classroom. I think he and Omeda are in Heaven fussing over Paul's shoving room dividers into Omeda's classroom space to accommodate his classroom floorplan. He was one of a kind, and we love him. Much love to dear Mary and her children/grandchildren.

Mary, Jack, and Stephen, please know how sorry I am to hear of Paul's passing. Paul was a kind, encouraging, and inspiring administrator. I remember Paul in his suit and tie, energetic (always), and smiling with a glint of joy in his eye in the mornings before school began. Paul loved everything about teaching, leading, and molding children to be their very best. I am thankful for the years working with Paul at Holy Trinity and am grateful for having such a good man as leader and friend. Mary, Jack, and Stephen, I will be praying for all of you. Know that Paul has left an indelible mark on my life. He showed me how to humbly commit to a vocation and to serve others selflessly and in a true Christian manner. -- With deepest sympathy, Cathy Jones (Miss Cathy)

So sorry for your family's loss. Mr. Medlar was the principal at Holy Trinity when I taught my first three years, just out of college. He gave me so much grace and encouragement in developing the music and art program there.

I am so thankful I had the opportunity to have Mr. Medlar as a teacher for several years at Loyall Elementary/Jr. High. He was such a special teacher. So many of things he taught could not be found in textbooks. Teaching us to think critically, to understand how to debate a topic without argument. From teaching us how to code on Commodore 64s and early IBMs to arranging for us to present a mock Presidential debate in front of the whole school during the 1992 election with all three candidates represented by teams of junior high students. If not for Mr. Medlar’s insistence that we practice logic puzzles, I may never have passed the GRE. I think of him often, as I’m sure most of his former students do. He had lasting impact on my life.
My deepest condolences and sympathy,
Jill Harris

I had him as a teacher at Green Hills Elementary and Junior High. He was one of the best. A story I’ll never forget him telling us was about him being in Washington on Mount Saint Helens when it erupted in 1980.
