Please share a memory of Ollie Mae to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ollie Mae Shout passed away peacefully on Monday, January 26, 2026, at The Manor Senior Living Community, Florence, South Carolina, where she lived a full and active life for more than fifteen years. Ollie was born in Stamping Ground, Kentucky on February 3, 1925 to Henry and Letitia Hutton. She loved to tell stories about her childhood such as her devotion to her pony, Trixie; wagon rides to school with her brother and sister from their farm; and memories of her daddy calling her by her nickname, Sweetie. Ollie graduated from Stamping Ground High School in 1943 and attended nursing school as a member of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps. She had a lengthy career as a registered nurse in both Alabama and Iowa, specializing in OBGYN care, and later became a nurse educator. She was married for 64 years to her late husband, Samuel Shout, and they raised four children. They lived in Kentucky, Alabama, Iowa and eventually retired in Tennessee. In 2003, they suffered their most heartbreaking loss with the passing of their eldest daughter, Pam. Ollie was the embodiment of the “Greatest Generation.” She was patriotic, frugal, loyal and dignified with a tireless work ethic and fierce commitment to her family and friends. She was health conscious and active long before it was in vogue. She only stopped her daily walks, lifting weights, and riding the three-wheel bike around The Manor after a serious fall at age ninety-five. As a lifelong Baptist she was devoted to her nightly bible readings until her eyesight began to fade at ninety-nine. Ollie was eternally optimistic for University of Alabama football, usually wearing a “lucky” piece of clothing to help them win. After moving to The Manor, she became incredibly social, volunteering as the librarian, serving on the council, and rarely missing a party or function. She was well known for her kindness, perfect posture, innate sense of style and striking light blue eyes. She dreamed of being a fashion designer, and though that dream was never realized, she expressed her creative talents through gardening, sewing, painting, photography, and short story writing. She devoted her retirement years to her family, creating lasting memories with her grandchildren through storytelling, art projects, and her famous annual Easter egg hunts. Without fail, every family visit was highlighted with her macaroni and cheese and a cake. She was blessed to keep her sharp mind and her wonderful sense of humor until the very end. Ollie will be lovingly remembered by her children, Robert Shout (Elaine), Pat McKay (Jim), and Kim Derakhshan (Mark Ourang); her grandchildren, Donna Tucker, Matt Tucker (Cassie), Jake Nollen, Kate Walker (Austin), Abbey Johnson (Dan), Jim McKay (Evan), Aryana Derakhshan, Claire Derakhshan, and Luke Derakhshan; fifteen great-grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Ollie was preceded in death by her husband Samuel Howe Shout; daughter Pamela Speed; parents Henry and Letitia Hutton; and siblings Robert Hutton, Marguerite (Tommie) Cardwell, and Jesse Hutton. Ollie will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 14th from 10 AM -11 AM with funeral services immediately following at 11 AM at Rogers Funeral Home in Frankfort, KY. Burial will follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Stamping Ground, KY. The family is grateful for the care and love Ollie received at The Manor Senior Living Community in Florence, SC. Memorial donations in Ollie’s name may be made to: The Manor Residents Assistance Fund, ATTN: Tara, 2100 Twin Church Rd, Florence, SC 29501.
