Obituary of Charles "Dickie" Dawkins

Charles Richard "Dickie" Dawkins, Jr., 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 2, 2026. He was born in Frankfort, KY on April 10, 1934 to the late Mary Louise Crutchfield Dawkins and Charles Richard Dawkins, Sr. Dickie is survived by his wife of 71 years, Helen Mae Moses Dawkins; his children Charles Michael Dawkins (Yan) of Rosenberg, TX, Mary Helen Wood (Michael) of Union, KY, and David Lee Dawkins (Colleen) of Versailles, KY; his twin brother William Irvin Dawkins (the late Vivian Dawkins) of Frankfort, KY; sister Mary Ann O'Brien of Lexington, KY; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Dickie loved his wife, children, and grandchildren dearly. He was an avid hunter, loved fishing, and enjoyed working in his garden and raising blackberries. Dickie retired as a supervisor from Bell South and AT&T after 29 years. He retired as a Lt. Colonel from the US Army and the 100th Division with 28 years of service, serving during the Vietnam Era and on active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Berlin Crisis. He was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, a member of the 4th Army Rifle Team, and received various military decorations including the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Bronze Hourglass, and Army Service Ribbon among many others. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans, Reserve Officers Association, American Legion Post 7, Association of the Century 100th Division, Oleika Shrine Center, Masonic Lodge Hiram #4, F&AM, Capital City Shrine Club, Lexington Scottish Rite, and 32nd Degree Order of Jesters, and was a past Deacon of First Baptist Church. Visitation will be at Rogers Funeral Home from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Monday, February 9th, with a Masonic Service at 1:00 pm immediately followed by the funeral service. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Children’s Lexington, Office of Philanthropy, 110 Conn Terrace, Lexington, KY 40508.
