To the family of Colonel Roy Gray: Thank you for an obituary that beautifully captured the life of a man that so many of us admired and loved. Cinda and I treasure the memories of times spent in the presence of your dad whether at work or socially. We admired him for his achievements in service for our country but also for his kindness and caring for everyone he met. When he spoke to me in any setting I always felt that he was totally focused on me alone. His humility masked the greatness that he represented to so many of us as he would never be the one to tell of his contributions to the country. His devotion to and pride in his family was always in the forefront of many conversations. He is a true hero and I am so grateful for the years of friendship with Colonel Gray. Carl and Cinda Raley

I loved working with Col Gray he was a kind and amazing man! I loved how he would ask me to show him how to use the fax machine, copier and type writer so that I would do those tasks for him! I loved every time he asked me and was happy to “show” him!

I have personally only known one true hero in my life and that was Colonel Roy Gray. He and my mother-in-law Mary (Shaw) Barr grew up together and for all the time I have been part of the Barr family I have heard so many stories about this wonderful man.
Colonel Gray and I shared a special privilege together by both wearing the uniform of a United States Marine, a bond that Marines know very well.
His bravery and love for his country goes beyond extraordinary. Very few people could ever truly imagine the sacrifices this man faced. He was not just a hero but one of the greatest role models amongst us.
My condolences go out to his entire family, I can only imagine both the sadness and pride you are all experiencing.
I truly wish I were 1200 miles closer to Frankfort on Saturday, dressed in my Blues, standing at attention for one final salute.
Thank you Colonel Gray for all you've given.
Respectfully
Larry Duane

Condolences to Colonel Gray's family. I cherish the time I worked with him at the F/A-18 office at Pax River and was proud to be called his friend. I remember fondly how he always called me "Anna Dear" and was such a gentleman. He was also very generous lending a car and money to a co-worker who was struggling. (I don't think he ever got either of them back!) One day I noticed he was limping a lot and I asked him if he was OK. His reply was one I heard many times after that if he felt like I was fussing over him, "you writing a book?" It became a little joke with us. I can only say that if I was writing a book, he'd be a wonderful main character. So to Roy, John, Marnie, Caroline, and Charlie, I extend my sincere sympathy and will keep you all in my prayers. Your Dad was definitely one-of-a-kind!

To all the Gray family, I send my condolences. Your parents were such a big part of my childhood, and there are too many memories to share. As a young child, I didn't know much about his career and accomplishments, though I was aware of how he was respected by many in the community. Learning about his experiences as an adult, I was in awe of his courage, strength and leadership. Growing up, he was kind and encouraging to me. It seemed he was often working on the boat, or some project. But most evenings, he and Mrs Gray would sit on the swing, listening to classical music and look at the creek. I am not sure we kids were the best company, but often we would join them, to sit and talk, and I appreciate how welcome we were made to feel. Peace to Col Gray, and all who loved him.

It was an honor to know Col. Gray. He served his country and community, a friend to many, and always made time for others. I will forever remember Roy sitting on his beach, listening to his old radio playing classical pieces, waiting for the green and red lights to come on. Rest well Col. Gray. You will be missed.

He will forever be a legend as one of the truly “greats” in Marine Corps Aviation history. I admired him. As a proud member of “Roy’s Boys,” the “Skipper” will live forever in my memory. He will never be forgotten.
