Papa Marshall was such an amazing figure in my life. I think about him everyday. Whenever I am driving, hiking, or traveling I always wish I could give him a call. My dad constantly shares stories of the trips they took when he was growing up. Last weekend I went on my first college visit to Charleston, SC. All I wanted to do was to call Papa and ask him what he thought of the town and what he thinks my next steps should be. He always had the best advice and knew how to reassure me when I was unsure in my decisions. While we were there my dad talked about how Papa and him took a trip to Savana Georgia where they tied chicken on a string and caught crabs with it off of one of the long docs over the marshes that you always see near the coast in the south. I miss you Papa and I really wish that we had gotten more time together.

I have fond memories of Marshall when he was a student at Hastings College. I was just a child but he always went out of his way to make me feel that I mattered.

My heart goes out to the Thompson family and extended family. I am not alone in saying that Marshall was one of my favorite people! And the patriarch of one of the most beautiful families I have ever known. Marshall's obituary shows that he was just as he seemed. I looked forward to when Marshall came to town. He always had cutting edge information to share, usually in science, something I wouldn't read about in the news for years. He tested my beliefs and left me with great reading material. He made every conversation meaningful. It was a deep joy to be in Marshall's company.
