Obituary of Ivory Moore

Ivory Staton Moore, 85, passed away in Frankfort, Kentucky on Monday, January 22, 2024. Ivory Ann was born in Lexington on May 14, 1938, the only child of Mary Edwards and William Staton. She spent much of her early childhood in Lexington, before her family moved to Stanton when she was in middle school. Ivory graduated from Powell County High School in Stanton in 1956. Ivory later moved to Winchester where she met and married Gerald Adams, having one child – daughter, Leslie Logan Carmen. In Winchester, Ivory worked for Southern Bell – later South Central Bell, Bell South, and then, AT&T – for more than 30 years, transferring to Frankfort in the late 70’s and eventually retiring from the company in the early 90’s. She later worked in state government, retiring from the Personnel Cabinet. Ivory was a life-long and very dedicated fan of Kentucky Basketball. She hardly ever missed watching a game, and loved every chance to visit Rupp Arena. In earlier times, she often followed the Cats on the road, having cheered them on at many SEC and NCAA tournaments. Ivory was also a voracious reader, reading several books most weeks of her adult life. She valued the importance of reading and storytelling, and felt strongly that everyone should have the ability to do so. As a result of this passion, Ivory volunteered as a tutor to help teach adults in her community to read and often volunteered at the public library. Aside from reading, and her latest interest of watching QVC, Ivory kept herself busy with other activities throughout the years, including painting classes and volunteering with the Silent Workers Circle. Ivory valued and cherished her family. As an only child, her first cousins felt more like siblings to her when she was growing up and she was very close with them throughout her adult life. Ivory’s daughter, Leslie, was the apple of her eye – she adored her and was so proud of her and her many accomplishments. Later in life, Ivory was thrilled to become a grandmother to Leslie’s two children, Elizabeth and Don. She relished her role as “Gran” and never missed an opportunity to spend time with them, attending every important event or activity in their lives. She was quite a hip grandmother; always ahead of her time, she seemed to age backwards in her attitude and spirit. Complete with her Apple watch, latest iPhone, and several social media profiles, she needed little help keeping up with everyone! In addition to her family, Ivory’s friends were very important to her. She often recounted that she had many friends throughout her life who felt more like family than friends. One very special friend, Elizabeth Logan, was the namesake and godmother to her daughter, Leslie Logan, and namesake of her granddaughter, Elizabeth. After moving to Frankfort later in life, Ivory was blessed to make several very dear friends with whom she remained close. Ivory valued her many friendships and treasured all of the special memories they made together. Ivory had a quiet, but unwavering, commitment to her Christian faith. Her belief in God guided her in life. She was a kind and caring person who was thoughtful in both word and deed. Ivory was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Edwards Moloney and William C. Staton; step-father, Shug Moloney; maternal grandparents, Ike “Pappy” and Minnie Edwards; husband, Adolph “Doc” Moore; son-in-law, Donald Howard Combs; and her beloved pets, “Sugar Babe”, “Sugar Babe II”, and “Duncan”. She is survived by her daughter, Leslie Adams Combs; grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne Alcie Combs and Donald Howard (Emily) Combs III; several cousins with whom she was very close; and her newest love, puppy “Pepper”. Honoring Ivory as pallbearers will be Donald Howard Combs III, Ron Turner, Lillian Brown, Virginia Nester, Pat Larson, Janice Williams, and Janet Lile; and serving as honorary pallbearers will be Peggy Staley, Barbara Tuttle, and Donna Cope. Services will be held in Frankfort at First Christian Church, with visitation on Saturday, January 27, 2024 from 11:30am-12:30pm and funeral service at 1:00pm, with burial to follow at the Lexington Cemetery. Arrangements will be managed by Rogers Funeral Home.
