Please share a memory of Libby to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sarah Elizabeth “Libby” Hamrick Jones Carr, 92, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2024 in her home at Dominion Assisted Living in Frankfort. Libby was born in Frankfort on October 25, 1931, the last of seven children of Elizabeth Gertrude Polsgrove Hamrick and William Howard Hamrick. She attended Bald Knob School and then received her GED at the age of 38, proud to do so at the same time that her daughter Sharon graduated from high school in 1969. Libby spent 42 years working at Stewart Home School, as a correspondent writing letters for the students to their families and friends, teaching weaving and crafts in a log cabin, and traveling with her students and her family around the world. She volunteered at the Senior Activity Center and made wreaths that were sold for financial support for the center, and was a life-long member of Antioch Church on Harvieland Road where she participated in the Antioch Women’s Group. Filled with creativity, Libby enjoyed painting with pastels, drawing with ink and pencil, writing poetry, sewing, and making costumes for her students, as well as growing a vegetable garden and raising the most extraordinary flowers. She traveled all over the world, built her own home, and learned to drive at the age of 32. She loved the Lord, reading the Bible, her family, the staff at Dominion, her students at Stewart Home, and her church family. Libby is survived by her daughters Sharon Koontz, Cathy Marlette, and Carol McDuffee and her son Richard “Ricky” Carr, as well as 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Mary Laura Current and Lois Gayhart, and her four brothers, William Edward Hamrick, Earl D. Hamrick, Joe Lee Hamrick, and Floyd Louis Hamrick. A service in celebration of Libby’s life will be held at Antioch Church with Pastor Dan Luttrell officiating at 11:00 am Monday, July 8th. A luncheon will follow, where the family encourages you to join them to reminisce and share your stories about Libby. Visitation will begin at 10:30 am. Music and songs will be provided by Rebecca Luttrell Briley, Alex Vorhaus, and Marilyn Milburn. Serving as pallbearers will be Philip “Andy”Koontz, Ted Marlette, Danny Hulker, Jimmy Bryan, Matt McCoy, and Tommy Current. Honorary bearers will be Wayne Moore and Harold Purvis. Flowers are welcome, while the family requests that any memorial contributions in Libby’s memory be made to Bluegrass Care Navigators (Hospice).
