Obituary of Sonnie Harris

Emerson "Sonnie" Harris, born on November 7, 1954, in Millville, Kentucky, passed away on December 3, 2024, at Lexington VA Hospital in Lexington, KY after a courageous battle with cancer. Sonnie was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, whose life was marked by dedication to family, service, and community.
Sonnie attended Rosenwald and Mayo-Underwood School, graduating from Frankfort High School. He proudly served in the United States Army for ten years and continued his commitment in the US Army Reserves for an additional twenty years, retiring after Operation Desert Storm. Following his military service, Sonnie worked at Centria Manufacturing until his retirement.
In his leisure, Sonnie found joy on the water, fishing, gardening, playing pool, and making music with his brother. He was known for his culinary skills, especially his famous fried fish and potatoes, which were a highlight at the family annual Christmas Brunch. A devoted family man, Sonnie cherished traveling with his loved ones and spending time with his grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
A lifelong member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Millville, Sonnie's faith was a cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Anita Renee Harris; his children, Dorothy, Shontel (Walter), and Shimira (Tattoo); grandchildren, Maysia, Mira, King, and Atayo; and great-granddaughter, Marleigh. He also leaves behind his siblings, Dorothy Harris-Mason (Andrew), Carolyn Harris, Carl Lee Harris (Virginia), and Freddy Harris (Clydette), along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Sonnie was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Freddie Harris, his sister, Phyllis Spellers, his brother, William Harris, and his best friend, John Willie Morgan.
Services will be held at First Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church, Frankfort, KY, on Saturday, December 14, 2024, with visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00pm.Interment will be at Green Hill Cemetery, Frankfort, KY, with a repast in the Fellowship Hall of First Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church.
