Obituary of Barbara Hecker
Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Barbara Ann Hecker passed away Monday, March 27. Born Barbara Day in Bellevue, Ky., in 1932, she was the widow of Franklin W. (Frank) Hecker, Sr. and the mother of Frank Jr. (Mona Potter), Donna (Tom Lowry), Robby (Wynee) and David (Cyndy). She is also survived by seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four nephews and a multitude of loving friends, including her best friends from childhood.
In addition to her husband, Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, George and Elvira Day, and her sister Mary Vogel.
Barbara was a life-long Democrat, an active member of the Franklin County Democratic Woman’s Club, and a tireless worker on many campaigns. After retiring from Sears, Co., she and Frank enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She also embarked on second careers working at the Capital Plaza Hotel and for the Senate Democratic Leadership in the Kentucky General Assembly. Barbara was a devoted UK Wildcat basketball fan who rarely missed a chance to cheer them on.
Barbara left behind a legacy of public service, volunteerism and civic engagement. She was matriarch of the Hecker family, always leading the charge and planning the next get-together. She was virtually unstoppable, issuing marching orders to her children until the very end.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church at 12:00 noon Friday with burial following in the Frankfort Cemetery. A reception will take place in the Caucus Room at the Capital Plaza Hotel between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. and all are invited and encouraged to come.
Visitation will be at Rogers Funeral Home from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and at the church from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Friday.
Pallbearers will be Katie Hecker Carney and Julian Bond, Patrick and Victoria Carney, Shane and Blair Hecker, Cody and Paige Hecker, Kristin Hecker, Matthew Hecker and Emily Hecker. Honorary bearers will be Rosie Schutzman, Jean (Toots) Schutzman, Peggy Dickerson, Joann Benke, Marilyn Grainger, Edie Hegge and Julie Hurtt.
While flowers are always welcomed, so are contributions to the charity of one’s choice.
