Obituary of Bettie Beach

Please share a memory of Bettie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

BEACH, Bettie, S. 90, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018. Bettie was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

Born Bettie Ree Shrewsbury, of Leitchfield, Kentucky, she married Gardner D. Beach (known as G.D., 1922-2015) in 1952. They raised their five children first in Beattyville, moving to Frankfort in 1964 when G.D. was appointed Banking Commissioner.

Bettie was always on the go. She and G.D. were active members of the Church of the Ascension for more than 60 years – she taught Sunday school and loved working in the church garden. For decades, Bettie sat on the UK Alumni Association Board of Directors, was a member of the Democratic Women’s Club, taught school in Franklin County, sat on the Kentucky Book Fair Board Committee, and volunteered in the garden of the Liberty Hall historic society. For over 40 years, Bettie worked at the Capitol when the General Assembly was in session, in both the House and the Senate.

Their surviving daughters and spouses are Nancy (Headley) Bell of Lexington, Julia Beach of Louisville and Mary Beach (Jim Goodman) of Vancouver. Surviving sons and spouse are James (Colleen) Beach of Louisville, and Clifton Beach of Seattle.

She is further survived by ten grandchildren and spouses: Price (Beth) Bell, Alice (Peter) Little, Gardner B. Bell, Samuel T. Beach, Mary (Mollie) M. Beach, Hannah S. Beach, Carter N. Beach, Gardner DeCoursey Beach, II, Charles C. Beach, and Augustus B. Goodman, and four great-grandchildren: George H. Bell, Mary Price Little, Caroline F. Bell, and John (Jack) C. Little.

All are grateful for the kindness and friendship Bettie and G.D. received in the years that the Episcopal Church Home was their home.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 24th from 12:30 - 2 pm at Church of the Ascension, 311 Washington St, Frankfort, KY. Funeral service will follow immediately thereafter. The Rev. William Jessee Neat and The Rev. Dr. William G. Brown will officiate. Private burial will take place after the service.  Arrangements by Rogers Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Church of the Ascension, 311 Washington St., Frankfort, KY 40601 or The Episcopal Church Home, 7504 Westport Road, Louisville, KY 40222.
