I didnt know Mark and only came across his obirutary because I was researchign his father who was Jean Everald Tangye's 'boss' in her years at The Savoy Hotel. I am a fan of Derek Tangye her husband whom Miles, his father, was aghast at her marrying. I read Mark's memories and thought gosh I wish I had known this man he sounds just such a lovely person and one with whom you would be able to talk for hours and find peace and hope. I wish him a peaceful onward journey and regret that I was not fortunate to know him. A beautiful soul.

Joanna, I am so sorry to hear of Mark's passing. He was such a joy every time I saw him in South or Downtown Frankfort, and I missed seeing him after he moved back to Louisville. He was a fascinating man with such a rich personal history, and I am grateful to have known him, if only a little. His presence will certainly be missed on this earth, but I think heaven gained a gem!

Mark Thornewill, to me you were a fascinating multi-colored tapestry of deep heartsoul, gentleman extraordinaire, and free spirit.
We met through our beloved Joanna. Almost twenty years ago, you provided pre-marital counseling, co-created our vows, and served as officiant at our marriage. The photos tell the story. You were dressed in multiple shades of white, twinkling and sprite-like. I wondered if our marriage would be official or if we were in some kind of faery tale!
Your enthusiasm, positivity and bounciness were contagious and we laughed a lot. I was never quite sure what had just happened upon leaving an encounter with you, especially after my one and only massage, that still holds the record of most unusual!
You seemed to live in a dimension of time and flow and delight of which I could only feel the edges, and you could only know. Upon reading about your life, and your experience of the Divine on the ship, I’m imagining that this relationship has served as the warp of your joyful tapestry.
Thank you for showing us how to live fully, kindly, joyously, graciously, upright at the helm of your life, and wrapping us in your vibrant tapestry.
Always Love to you and your family,
Hunter Purdy

I'll always remember my 'Gruncle' Mark's kindness and generosity when I visited Kentucky as a 19-year old traveller, back in the summer of 2001. He sent me off in his pick-up truck to explore the countryside and visit my cousins. It was strange and magical to see in Mark, and my cousins, so many familiar traits and quirts. The evidence of our shared history and genealogy. Reading here about his amazing life makes me realize just what a pioneer he was. Thank you, Gruncle Mark.

From Louise Turner Chawla
My back yard in South Frankfort adjoined Mark’s back yard. One evening at dusk I was gardening until late in the back flower bed when I realized that a tall man was leaning over his fence, silhouetted against the last light, looking down at me with curiosity. That is how I met Mark. After that we had many dinners at my house and his house, with Lana and Frankfort and Louisville friends. On routine days, we were dog-walking friends. My Sharpei lab rescue dog, Jacques, showed an immediate deep affinity for Mark, and Mark returned his affection. I gave Mark a leash, and he often walked Jacques during the day. In the evening and on weekends, we walked Jacques together. One weekend we were exploring paths through the wild overgrown east side of the Kentucky River. Mark suggested that we short cut into downtown Frankfort through the old railroad tunnel. I didn’t think this was a safe idea. It was a narrow tunnel hewn out of stone, and we didn’t know the train schedule. But Mark forged ahead into the tunnel and Jacques and I followed. Three-quarters of the way through, we heard the train coming. Mark and I might have flattened ourselves tight against the wall and survived, but what about Jacques? I had a vision of us left like a puddle of tomato sauce on the tracks. We ran as fast as we could and got out a few seconds before the train came through. Doing anything with Mark was likely to become an adventure. When I moved away from Frankfort to Colorado, Mark and my friend Reba Rye were the two people standing on the sidewalk, waving me and Jacques good-bye, and I left a piece of my heart in both of them.

I will always remember Mark’s exuberance, his big spreading smile and his zeal for life. His energy permeated the house on Tophill Road, which I was fortunate enough to experience growing up as a pal of Joanna’s. The blending of traditions, progressive thinking and music inside those walls was rare indeed and I’m forever thankful to have been a part of it. May Mark’s memory be a blessing to all of you and to those who knew him. Sending love to you all!

Mark had a beautiful curiosity for other people which led to a rich and joyful life. He took me on as a father figure in a way I will never forget. He was a lovely soul and he will be missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

Uncle Mark was an inspiration to us all. With boundless energy and endless stories to tell, Mark was always so kind and interested. We have so many happy memories of time spent with him over the years and we all miss him very much.
Some of our favourite moments ... staying with him at Yonder Cottage; enjoying his brilliant dancing and musical talent; finding him lying on the grass watching the clouds go by. His Sherlock Holmes cape and blue hat and his tie died Kaftans!! His infectious laughter and zest for life. Thinking of all the family and sending so much love. Mark always showed genuine interest and care whenever we met throughout the various stages of life. I vividly remember going to the Thornewill home with Araby for dinner and games when 17 years old. I always met with with warmth and the welcoming of being part of a gathering even when I was a stranger.
May your days be filled with loving stories and memories inspired by Mark’s 95 years of a remarkable life.
With love and deepest respect,
Jill Meyers (October 26, 2020)

It was a true pleasure to have met this lovely gentleman and to have spent some time with him hearing his wonderful naval stories. I will always be grateful for the many kindnesses he showed to Jack over his many visits to Louisville. I send my deepest condolences to all of his family at this very difficult time.
Sincerely,

I loved reading Mr. Thornewill's letters to the editor of the local newspaper. And he was a classy guy whenever I'd see him in downtown Frankfort. I'm sorry he's passed.
