Rev. Dr. William C. Calhoun, Sr. posted a condolence

My dear Bowers Family: I am just learning of Dr. Bowers' passing. My heartfelt sentiment and sympathy is extended Mrs. Bowers to you and yours. My name is William C. Calhoun and I am the son of First Baptist Church of Frankfort, where the late Dr. K. L. Moore was pastor for over 47 years. I currently serve at the Trinity Baptist Church of Baltimore, Maryland. I am the 7th pastor and have been here 44 years being catapulted with the presence of Dr. Bowers on my ordaining council at 1st Baptist in April 1974. I knew of his commitment to civil and human rights. He lived out his theology and preaching with great integrity. I remember when he would come to the Mayo-Underwood school and speak at our devotional assemblies to start our day. He was about bridging the racial divide, encouraged ecumenical relations, and was about lifting the burdened, bringing solace to the hurting, and comforting those who were in sorrow. He was just a great human being and servant of Christ. I leave with this humorous episode: One of Dr. Bowers' colleague on the council tried to trip me up on a theological question. He saw that I was in a dilemma and I was stalling in search of the right answer. With his sonorous boom and bass voice he interrupted the interrogator saying, I think that this young man has given us enough that demonstrates his knowledge of the Articles of Faith. We have questioned him enough! I said thank you Jesus. He moved that I be ordained as a Baptist minister. God bless you all and God bless the revered, respected, and loved Dr. Herman Bowers. Dr. Bowers, we will see you on the other side!

My condolences. I didn't know Dr. Bowers, but I do know his daughter, Dr. Bowers of Paducah. She is my doctor, and I was very impressed with the Christian items she has in her office and waiting room---no doubt she got this from her father and upbringing. You don't see this very much in doctor's offices.

When our loved ones fall asleep in death it can be very devasting. When we think about how certain species of trees can live over 100 + years. We may wonder why we as humans only have only an expectant life span of 70 or perhaps 80 years. Romans 5:12 explains why this is so. Isaiah 25:8 tells us that in his due time, Almighty God will swallow up death forever. He will restore life to many who have fallen asleep in death.

Brother Bowers was a wonderful person. I only met him when I attended Trinity with my cousin Judy. I know how much he meant to her. Sorry I won't be able to attend the funeral due to prior commitments. RIP and Heaven just got a new angel.

I am so sorry to hear of Bro. Bowers passing. He was quite the gentleman and held a special place in the hearts of all of my family, especially my mom, Myrtle. He was so kind and such a good pastor. He held the most respect for me, as I did him. I will be remembering your family in my prayers. May God grant you comfort and peace knowing that he has reached that final goal.
With love,
Rick Newnam
